The ceremony was called off last year for a good reason—it lacked any Black members, and actor Brendan Fraser claimed HFPA President Philip Berk had inappropriately touched him. For instance, a lavish press trip to Paris that led to multiple nominations for the well-liked Netflix series Emily in Paris was accused of bribery.
The show’s first-ever Black presenter, Jerrod Carmichael, decided to address the matter directly during his opening monologue on Tuesday night. “Hello. Greetings from the 80th Golden Globe Awards! I’m Jerrod Carmichael, your host. I’ll also explain why I’m here.
Because I’m Black, I’m here, he said. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which I won’t know was a racist organization but didn’t have a Black member until George Floyd died, prevented the Golden Globe Awards from airing last year for various reasons.
Additionally, Carmichael claimed he informed his friend Avery of the $500k fee he received to host the program. Avery warned him, “Boy if you don’t put on a good suit, take those white people’s money.“

And I think evenings like these are something this industry needs, Carmichael added. The host later told the audience to “shut the f—k up” despite stating that the business had a right to celebrate its victories. We don’t think he’ll be asked to host the ceremony the following year.
