Square Enix Continues To Focus On Blockchain: Despite the public outrage against the effort, Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda confirmed the company’s emphasis on blockchain technology in a New Year’s address, saying that “several blockchain games based on original IPs are under development.”
It’s worth noting that Matsuda said something similar in his New Year’s message from January of last year when the firm initially shared its optimism for an NFT-powered, metaverse future.
In more recent times, Squeenix has teamed with the “environmentally friendly” blockchain business Oasys, perhaps to avoid future concerns around, you know, the environmental impact of the technology.
In his letter, Matsuda addressed some of the public criticism, saying that it is normal for new technologies to face resistance at first but eventually win over the public. He noted, “Innovation follows the introduction of new technology and frameworks, but this process can be fraught with misunderstanding.”
Some technologies and frameworks are able to weather societal shifts because they become embedded in people’s daily lives, paving the way for the emergence of new enterprises and economic expansion.
The market was pushed more by speculative speculators than by gamers, Matsuda conceded. His counterargument was that “active debate than ever before” had been had about “what makes the games attractive and what their user community looks like” at “several blockchain gaming events hosted internationally.”
Square hasn’t helped clear anything up, and it’s still unclear how this technology might enhance games. The company’s focus is unmistakably on the blockchain.
Squeenix announced that they will utilize the $300 million they received from the sale of their western studios and intellectual property (IP), which included Tomb Raider and Deus Ex, to fund “new enterprises by going forward with investments in domains such blockchain, AI, and the cloud.”
Other live-service games inside Square’s domain are also ending operations. On January 11th, support will cease for the Final Fantasy 7 spin-off battle royale game The First Soldier, while on February 28th, support will expire for Bravely Default: Brilliant Lights.

Even if there are game cancellations, blockchain controversies, or remakes of old favorites, Square Enix should still have a successful 2023. Forspoken, their upcoming magic-slinging parkour game, launches on January 24. Final Fantasy 16, the latest installment in Square’s flagship series, will launch on PlayStation 5 on June 22.
