How Many Characters Are in Sonic?

The characters that have appeared in the Sonic the Hedgehog series are listed below. Due to their lack of a Nintendo console, some games might not be mentioned.

Protagonists

Sonic the Hedgehog

The titular Sonic the Hedgehog first appeared in the video game of the same name. A blue hedgehog, he is widely considered one of the most iconic figures in gaming history. His quickness, which appears to have improved over time, has become his trademark. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games for the Wii was his first appearance alongside Nintendo characters (without trashing Sega), but his appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl undoubtedly made a bigger stir among fans. The fact that Sega and Nintendo have worked together on these two titles and many others (like the Triforce arcade system) shows how far their relationship has progressed since the days when they were fierce competitors.

Miles “Tails” Prower

“Tails” Miles Since Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Prower has been one of Sonic’s most reliable allies. The character known as Tails didn’t master using his two tails for flight until the third film. Sonic Adventure DX: Director’s Cut for the GameCube marked his first debut on a Nintendo-owned console, but maybe even more unexpected was his and the rest of the Sonic gang’s cameo in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, where he was included as a playable character.

Knuckles the Echidna

The red-coloured Knuckles the Echidna first appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. He is named after his big knuckles and, in contrast to the other series heroes, has a short fuse. The GameCube version of Sonic Adventure DX: Director’s Cut marked his debut on a Nintendo-owned console. He frequently assists Sonic in finding the Chaos Emeralds throughout the games in which he has appeared, and on rare occasions, he even has his missions. The two have had a rivalry ever since Rouge the Bat made his debut in a video game, possibly as a result of how similar they are to one another. In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, Knuckles and the majority of the other Sonic characters made their first appearances alongside the Mario ensemble.

Amy Rose

One of the series’ most prominent characters, Amy Rose, first appeared on a Nintendo platform in Sonic Adventure DX: Director’s Cut for the GameCube before making her debut in Sonic the Hedgehog CD (like most of the Sonic characters). Perhaps her most recognisable features are her enormous mallet, her pink hair, and her unfulfilled crush for Sonic (Sonic simply views her as a friend). In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games for the Wii, she and the rest of the Sonic ensemble made a startling appearance alongside a Nintendo-owned character (later remade for Nintendo DS).

Cream the Rabbit

One of the few well-known characters to make their debut on a Nintendo system was the bunny Cream the Rabbit, who appeared in Sonic Advance 2 on the Game Boy Advance. She is mainly recognised for her friendship with Cheese, a Chao. Even while playing, Cheese won’t be far behind the two of them as they go off on their travels. Amy and she are close friends (above). For the Nintendo DS game Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, Cream the Rabbit is an optional playable character.

Big the Cat

Big the Cat is a gluttonous main character who keeps a frog as a pet. While Big would eventually make an appearance in Sonic Adventure 2: Battle for the GameCube, his first appearance on a Nintendo console, that was his first appearance in Sonic Adventure. He enjoys fishing and sharing a home with Froggy. His friendship with Amy Rose is his other significant association.

Silver the Hedgehog

Sonic’s competitor is named Silver the Hedgehog. He has so far made appearances in several Sonic video games, including Sonic and the Secret Rings, Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, Sega Superstars Tennis, and even Super Smash Bros. Brawl, when he made a cameo appearance on the Green Hill Zone stage and served as a trophy. He typically appears as a cameo in the majority of the games that were already mentioned. Silver the Hedgehog was supposed to be a playable character in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games but was taken out for unidentified reasons. However, the user is still able to hack into the game and unlock him that way.

Blaze the Cat

One of Sonic the Hedgehog’s recurring characters is an interdimensional cat named Blaze. She protects the Sol Emeralds, the polar opposite of the Chaos Emeralds, and is often forced to do so against Eggman Nega’s attacks. Blaze’s ability to manipulate fire is reflected in her name; she is Pyrokinetic.

Princess Blaze is also regal in her universe, so much so that she is sometimes referred to as “Queen Blaze the Cat.” Similar to the official Sonic mini-site from Sega of America, Sonic Central. Except for Sonic the Hedgehog, most of Blaze’s appearances have been on Nintendo systems (2006). Her Nintendo debut was in the game Sonic Rush. Her closest companions are the raccoon, Marine, and the hedgehog, Silver. Her enhanced form is called Burning Blaze.

Neither friend nor foe

Shadow the Hedgehog

Sonic Adventure 2 was eventually redone as Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, and it introduced a new character to the series: Shadow the Hedgehog, an anti-hero. He was built to be the Ultimate Lifeform by Dr Eggman’s grandpa, Gerald Robotnik, using Black Doom’s genetic material.

Shadow’s memory loss occurred following the death of his close friend Maria in the Space Colony Ark raid. He thought Maria had asked him to destroy Earth. Shadow initially helped Sonic defeat the Biolizard, but later joined Sonic’s cause after recovering his memory. Shadow’s tough upbringing has left him with a hard exterior; he might easily be persuaded to fight for either good or evil. He enjoys a friendly rivalry with Sonic and Silver, but he always does what is right in the end.

Rouge the Bat

Rouge is a very determined bat that will do anything to acquire precious stones. She’s easily distracted by precious stones; Knuckles had to fight her off once to recover Master Emerald. ‘Fine, you can have it, it looks like glass anyway,’ she reportedly said.

E-123 Omega

E-123 The Omega is a fictional robot in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. He was originally seen in Sonic Heroes, where Dr Eggman had him guarding Shadow the Hedgehog’s stasis pod after he had been formed. Together with Rouge and Shadow, he forms the anti-Dr. Eggman superteam Team Dark.

Antagonists

Doctor Eggman

Devious and malevolent, Doctor Eggman is a scientist who creates a wide variety of mechanical contraptions. It’s not the first time he’s tried to grab the Chaos emerald from Sonic, but every time he’s been defeated. To wipe Sonic off the face of the planet, he first tried and failed to kill Sonic’s father But he always comes back; not even a tiny blue hedgehog can keep him away!

Metal Sonic

When energised by the Chaos Emeralds, Metal Sonic, a robot built by Dr Eggman to defeat Sonic, becomes Super Neo Metal Sonic!
