Rae was just 6 months old when she was diagnosed with brain cancer and underwent chemotherapy. Because of the treatment’s effect on her pituitary gland, she experienced a severe slowing of growth (pituitary dwarfism). She experienced complete healing from her cancer years ago.
At age 8, she began intermittently receiving growth hormones; after she reached puberty, this medication was terminated permanently. “I reached the finish line; you could say,” Rae told The Post.

A 26-year-old travel blogger named Dan Swygart has been rumored to be Rae’s new boyfriend, and the couple’s apparent blossoming romance has recently made headlines.
During the second season of the TLC show, viewers saw dates between Rae and Swygart, leading some to label the man as “creepy” for having an inappropriate crush on a woman who appears to be so young.
While Rae gave Swygart the okay, she told The Post that after years of being a singleton, she had developed the capacity to spot creeps. She explained that she had suddenly learned to recognize people who “gave themselves away” as having less than pure motives.
“Their questions are very targeted toward my physicality … They’re learning about me like I’m a specimen in a lab.” She also said that potential partners often talk to her like she’s in the third grade.
“I view myself as intelligent, and I think when people first see me, they don’t see me as intelligent,” the star said. “They still don’t understand that I have that intelligence there.”
“I tend to find guys that are just one-dimensional and don’t actually have any depth to the conversation. [A deeper connection] is what I’m looking for. I feel like: ‘If I can teach you something, you can teach me something’ — that’s what I look for in relationships.”
In the second season of “I Am Shauna Rae,” Rae’s parents liked Swygart, a potential boyfriend from the UK when he met them. The gentleman also used social media earlier this week to defend their dates.
“It’s very important to remember that Shauna is an incredible 23-year-old woman with a disability,” he said. “So as you build a connection with her, it’s important to acknowledge her disability and look past that and build it with who she is as an individual.”
He went on: “As soon as you say that she can’t have a real-world connection with someone else, you dehumanize her. She is a human being. She deserves to have relationships and connections with whoever she wants.” Over the weekend, he told haters that their comments about the two’s friendship were “absolutely disgusting.”
