On Friday, South Carolina Senator Tim Scott formally entered the Republican primary for president in 2024, joining an increasingly crowded field that includes former President Donald Trump.
Scott is planning a campaign announcement for Monday in North Charleston. On Friday morning he officially launched his bid for the presidency by filing a statement of candidacy with the Federal Election Commission.
The 57-year-old lawmaker, the only Black Republican in the Senate, enters the race as a significant underdog. Even after establishing an exploratory committee last month, he has consistently polled in the low single digits in potential field surveys.
The filing allows the senator’s campaign to begin placing TV and radio ads as part of a massive $6 million buy for Iowa and New Hampshire, but the Scott campaign has yet to comment on the news. Ads should debut the following Wednesday.
Scott’s politics, characterized by optimism and overt gestures toward reuniting a fractured nation, have been largely absent from the Republican presidential conversation.
Trump, who is clearly in the lead in the polls, frequently uses divisive language to characterize the United States under President Joe Biden as a dystopia.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a leading contender widely expected to launch his own presidential bid next week, gained national prominence by picking fights with national figures over divisive social issues.
Scott has been critical of Biden but has also focused on a message of unity similar to the Democratic nominee’s platform for 2020. On the beginning of the Civil War anniversary, the day he announced his candidacy for president, he said, “America’s soul was put to the test, and we prevailed.”

“I will never back down in defense of the conservative values that makes America exceptional,” On the day the video was uploaded, he made this statement.
Nikki Haley, a former governor of South Carolina and a fellow Republican, has been in the race for president since February.
Immediately, Democrats tried to associate Scott with Trump.

“Even before he refused to name a policy difference with Trump, Scott was a fierce advocate of the MAGA agenda – supporting national abortion bans and championing plans to end Medicare and Social Security as we know them,” Jaime Harrison, a former candidate for the Senate from South Carolina and the current chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNA), made the following statement last Friday. “There’s no question that special interests are celebrating as Tim Scott throws his hat into the 2024 race for the MAGA base.”
