Justin Roiland Faces Domestic Violence: According to a criminal complaint filed by the Orange County District Attorney in May 2020, “Rick and Morty” star and co-creator Justin Roiland have been charged with felony domestic violence in connection with an incident that happened in 2020.
Thursday, he went to court for a pre-trial hearing. In 2020, Roiland pleaded not guilty. One of Roiland’s lawyers said in a statement that his client is innocent and expects the case to be dropped. Attorney T. Edward Welbourn wrote, “We look forward to clearing Justin’s name and helping him move on as soon as possible.”
NBC News got a copy of the criminal complaint in the case, which says that Roiland, 42, is guilty of one felony count of domestic battery with corporal injury and one felony count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud, or deceit. NBC News is the first news outlet to discuss the case publicly.
The complaint says that the incident happened on or around January 19, 2020, and that it happened to a person named Jane Doe, who was dating Roiland at the time. According to court records, Roiland pleaded not guilty to both charges in October 2020.
Since then, there have been more than a dozen court hearings on the case, including hearings before the trial. A date for the problem has not been set yet. Many court records were still sealed, but NBC News saw that Roiland was charged in May 2020.
Roiland was arrested in August 2020 and given a $50,000 bond. He was brought to court in October 2020. The court minutes from October 2020 show that Roiland was told not to harass, threaten, or spy on the person named in the protective order.
NBC News does not know this person. The order says that Roiland can’t get within 100 feet of the person. It also says that Roiland has to turn in any guns he owns or has. The order is in effect until October 2023, and no one knows who asked for it.

A protective order keeps the public from seeing details about the case, like police body camera footage, police reports, abuse investigation reports, medical reports, and recordings of interviews. The document that says Roiland should be arrested is also sealed.
During the hearing on Thursday, Roiland’s lawyer confirmed that there is a plea offer for Roiland, but he didn’t go into details. The short meeting ended a minute later when everyone agreed to meet again on April 27. Roiland was told he had to be there.
Roiland is best known for the Adult Swim show “Rick and Morty,” which is one of the most popular adult comedies and has become a billion-dollar media and merchandise franchise. The show’s sixth season started airing in September 2022, and Cartoon Network ordered a seventh season as part of a long-term deal for 70 new episodes.
Roiland created the show with Dan Harmon and voiced the two main characters. Adult Swim didn’t want to say anything because its parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, also owns Cartoon Network. Over the past three years, Roiland’s career has grown while the domestic violence case has moved slowly forward.
In 2021, he put out a collection of NFT art with more than a dozen pieces that sold for more than $1.65 million. In 2022, he released another NFT project. In 2021, Roiland also sold his first painting at an auction at Sotheby’s.

Roiland also helped make “Solar Opposites,” which started on Hulu in 2020 and was picked up for a fifth season in October 2022. Most recently, he worked on the Hulu series “Koala Man,” whose first episode came out this month.
Roiland’s studio, Squanch Games, also made the video game “High on Life,” which came out in 2022. The week it came out, it was the best-selling game on Steam and the fourth most-played Xbox game. Roiland won an Emmy for “Rick and Morty” in 2020, and the show also won a TV award from the Hollywood Critics Choice Association in 2022.
