Political Journalist Blake Hounshell Dies at 44!
The New York Times said on Tuesday that political columnist Blake Hounshell had died after a “battle with depression.” He was 44. Joe Kahn, the editor-in-chief of the New York Times, and Carolyn Ryan, the managing editor, sent an email to the staff saying that Hounshell, who had worked for the paper since 2021, had “tragically passed away” from what seems to be a suicide.
“Blake was a hard-working reporter who quickly made a name for himself as our best newsletter writer for politics. During a busy election cycle, he became a voice in the report that couldn’t be done without because he always had good ideas.
“We’ve lost a valuable team member, which is very sad for all of us.” The Times published a statement from Hounshell’s family, which said, “It is with great sadness that we have to tell you that Blake died suddenly this morning after a long and brave battle with depression.
Sandy, his wife, and their two children are in our thoughts and prayers. At this time, we ask that you give them space and respect. A person from the Times did not say anything else. Hounshell writes a lot. His most recent column, “Death Penalty in California is a Puzzle for Newsom,” was posted Monday on the Times’ website.
The columnist wrote the paper’s “On Politics” newsletter, which talked about things like how hard it is for the Republican Party to win over Generation Z voters, what happened when Sam Bankman-FTX Fried’s exchange failed, and how hard it is to get Kevin McCarthy elected as speaker of the House.
Hounshell came from Politico, where he was the managing editor for Washington and politics. He now works for the Times. He worked there for eight years and covered things like Congress, the White House, the courts, national security, and defense. Hounshell was the managing editor of Foreign Policy magazine before he joined Politico.
