First Lady Jill Biden: The White House said Wednesday that doctors removed a cancerous spot on Jill Biden’s chest and one above her right eye. A third spot on her left eyelid is being looked at. The president’s doctor, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, said that tests showed the scar over Jill Biden’s right eye and the new site on her chest was basal cell carcinoma.
O’Connor’s report says that the growth on her left eyelid was “fully excised, with margins, and sent for standard microscopic examination.” Basal cell carcinoma is the most common and treatable type of skin cancer.
People think it’s easy to treat, especially if caught early. It is slow-growing cancer that usually stays on the surface of the skin. Doctors can almost always get rid of it all with a small cut, and it rarely gets worse or kills the person who has it.
The Bidens spent the day at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. The first lady, 71 years old, had a standard outpatient procedure called Mohs surgery to remove the lesions and look at them. The press secretary for Jill Biden said that the first lady was “doing well and in good spirits” when she got back to the White House Wednesday night. O’Connor said she had “some swelling and bruising” on her face.
