According to authorities, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake that shook northeastern Syria and southeast Turkey early on Monday has killed more than 15,000.
The village of Pazarcik in Turkey’s southeast Kahramanmaras province was the epicenter of the early-morning earthquake, followed by several strong aftershocks.
On both sides of the border, thousands of buildings were destroyed, and as rescuers dug through the enormous mounds of rubble for survivors, the death toll was predicted to grow.
The earthquake that shook Turkey and Syria this week claimed the lives of at least three Americans, and the State Department acknowledged Wednesday.
Following the terrible earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, President Joe Biden expressed his condolences and prayers on Americans’ behalf during a Wisconsin event on Wednesday.
“It’s one of the worst earthquakes in that region in over 100 years, and we mourn the loss of so many lives and offer our deepest condolences,” he said.
