Rep Katie Porter Launches Bid for Feinstein’s California Senate Seat!

Rep Katie Porter Launches Bid: Rep. Katie Porter of California said on Tuesday that she would run for the Senate in 2024. This started her campaign for Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s seat in what could be a tough Democratic primary.

Feinstein, who has been in the Senate since 1992 and is 89 years old, has not yet said what she plans to do in 2024, and her office did not respond to a request for comment on Porter’s announcement. But many Democrats think she will likely retire instead of running for a sixth full term.

Porter, a former law professor who won her Orange County-area House seat in 2018, has been a great fundraiser since then. In 2022, when the redistricting process put her home in Irvine in the 47th District, she had to introduce herself to about two-thirds of the voters for the first time.

At Harvard Law School, Porter took classes with Elizabeth Warren, a senator. Porter is best known across the country for her thoughtful questions in House Oversight Committee hearings. She is also a leading progressive and vice chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

“California needs a warrior in the Senate to stand up to special interests, fight the dangerous imbalance in our economy, and hold so-called leaders like Mitch McConnell accountable for rigging our democracy,” Porter said Tuesday in a tweet with a video announcing her candidature.

If Feinstein decided to leave the Senate, there would probably be a lot of competition for the high-profile seat in the most populous state in the country. Other possible candidates include Rep. Adam Schiff, Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis, Attorney General Rob Bonta, and former Congressman and current US Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra.

Schiff sees Feinstein as a mentor, so he went to see her in December to tell her he was thinking about running for office. A source there said it was to show her the respect she deserved.

Feinstein has filed paperwork with the FEC to run for reelection in 2024, but she has recently been criticized for her ability to do the job. She didn’t agree with those ideas. Last year, she told CNN that she felt “absolutely” able to do her job well, adding, “I think that’s pretty clear.”
