Rep George Santos Faces Calls: Rep. George Santos is facing more calls from House Republicans to resign after state GOP leaders in New York said he should step down because his biography for the 2022 midterm election was full of lies and falsehoods.
Rep. Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., who is also starting his first term, stopped being unsure about whether Santos should resign and said so clearly on Thursday. “His party, constituents, and colleagues no longer trust or support George Santos.
Lawler said in a statement, “Because of the number and seriousness of the allegations against him, his inability to take full responsibility for his actions, and the many ongoing investigations, I believe he is unable to do his job and should resign.”
Rep. Max Miller, a Republican from Ohio, said that Santos should step down because of what he said about being Jewish. Santos ran for Congress saying he was Jewish, but he recently told The New York Post, “I never said I was Jewish.”
“It’s not okay to make things up or lie to get ahead in politics. Miller, who is Jewish, said in a statement Thursday night that this is especially true when the lie tries to make money off the deaths of millions of Jews. “I don’t think George Santos can do his job well, so he should quit.”
Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., said Thursday that Santos “should resign.” One day after, she asked the Ethics Committee to investigate him, which she said could take weeks or months. “It is a problem for us in Congress because Americans don’t trust anyone.

They think all politicians lie, but there are good ones among us who are trying to do the right thing, Mace said on MSNBC’s Morning Joe. “He should leave, but he won’t.” Santos said Thursday that he won’t quit “until those same 142,000 people” in New York voted for him “tell me they don’t want me.”
(The New York State Board of Elections says 145,824 people voted for him in November.) And R-Calif. Speaker Kevin McCarthy is not telling him to quit. McCarthy told reporters on Thursday, “He has a long way to go to earn trust, but I know that you apply the Constitution the same way to all Americans.”
“The people in his district voted for him. He is in a chair. He’s a Republican Conference member. There are worries about him so he will go to the Ethics Committee. He will be held accountable if anything wrong is found, just like everyone else in this body.”
Santos presents a political dilemma for Republicans. The national news about his lies has hurt his reputation and embarrassed a party that doesn’t want to be known for him. In New York, the GOP did better than expected and won four House seats in the midterm elections.

But McCarthy is in charge of a small majority. He can lose no more than four votes before he needs Democratic votes to pass laws, and Santos has been a reliable vote for him so far. Santos took over a Long Island seat that Democrats held. If he quits, it could be up for grabs again in an election called “special.”
Rep. Brandon Williams, a Republican representing a swing district in upstate New York, said Wednesday that he agrees with Republicans in Nassau County who want Santos to step down. Williams said in a statement, “He must resign,” citing “biographical exaggerations and apparent lies.”
Some Republicans aren’t sure what to do about Santos. They worry about him but don’t want him to leave. That includes Rep. Marc Molinaro of New York, who is in his first term. “I don’t think he can do his job. But the man needs to be honest with himself and his constituents, and it’s clear to me that he can’t do his job,” Molinaro told reporters on Thursday.
Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., co-chair of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus, said Wednesday that Santos deserves a fair investigation before being forced to resign, even though he said the congressman’s “conduct was egregious.”
“I don’t think he should be here. But there is a process that all members of both parties in both chambers must follow, Fitzpatrick said on MSNBC. “We should just look at it quickly.” You are everything I ever dreamed of and more.” Keep yourself updated with all the latest news from our website Lighthousejournal.org and get all the recent updates.
