To discourage theft, particularly among repeat offenders, Democratic Mayor Eric Adams has advised New York City customers to take off their face masks before entering establishments.
“Do not allow people to enter the store without taking off their face mask, and then once they’re inside, they can continue to wear if they so desire to,” Adams told 1010-WINS.
“When you see these mask-wearing people, often it’s not about being fearful of the pandemic. It’s fearful of the police catching [them] for their deeds,” he said.
Adams’ request for unmasking at store entrances comes as authorities look into a guy suspected of killing a bodega employee on Friday on the Upper East Side.
Authorities claimed in a Monday press conference that they anticipate the heist is connected to three others in the Bronx. The alleged culprit is said to have arrived at the bodega on a scooter while wearing a hazmat suit.
According to the New York Post, a recent study by the New York City Police Department revealed a 10% decline in retail theft claims in February compared to the prior year without providing an adequate explanation.
The mayor follows the New York City Police Department’s advice to companies that customers should remove their face masks as a “condition of admission” because of increased robberies.

According to local PIX 11, NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey stated during a press conference last week that masks enable burglars to avoid detection on video surveillance.
“People are coming up to our businesses, sometimes with masks, sometimes masks, hoods, and latex gloves, and they’re being allowed, they’re being buzzed in and allowed to enter the store and we have a robbery,” Maddrey said.
The police chief continued, “We are urging the businesses to make this a condition of an entrance, that when they come in, they show their face and should identify themselves.
