Miley Cyrus Releases New Single: Flowers, Miley Cyrus’s new single, came out (on January 13) on the birthday of her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth. This was a not-so-subtle nod to the fact that they were together and then broke up.
Cyrus sings in the song that she can buy flowers, go dancing, and love herself better than anyone else. Cyrus, 30, and Hemsworth, 33, have been together on-and-off since 2009. They got engaged in 2012 and broke up in 2013.
They got back together in 2016 and got married in December 2018. Then, in August 2019, they broke up again, and their divorce was finalized in January 2020. In the first verse, Cyrus sings, “We were right until we weren’t, built a home and watched it burn,” which seems to be about her relationship with Hemsworth.
In November 2018, Cyrus and Hemsworth lost their California home in the terrible wildfires that killed more than 100 people and destroyed more than 25,000 buildings. Cyrus wrote on Twitter at the time, “Completely devastated by the fires in my community. I am one of those who are lucky.
“My animals and the LOVE OF MY LIFE got out safely, and that’s all that matters right now. My house is no longer standing, but the memories I had with my family and friends are still strong.”

Cyrus sings later in the song, “I didn’t want to leave, baby, and I didn’t want to fight.” Cyrus talked about her breakup on the Howard Stern show in December 2020. She said, “When I come home, I want to be anchored by someone. I’m not interested in drama or fights.”
People magazine said around the time of their divorce that Cyrus had been trying to keep them together, but Hemsworth had filed for divorce, citing “irreconcilable differences.” In the music video for the song, which Jacob Bixenman directed, Cyrus dances through the streets of Los Angeles, swims in a pool, and works out in her underwear.
