Kate Middleton and Queen Camilla escaped a wardrobe malfunction despite some blustery wind. This was the first Commonwealth Day Service the Princess of Wales, 41, and Queen Consort, 75, attended in their new royal capacities.
Kate and Camilla had to physically hold on to their hats as they entered Westminster Abbey for the afternoon celebration! The Queen Consort and the Princess of Wales appeared to be laughing as they gripped onto their hats to keep them from perhaps flying off in the gusty wind.
It brought to mind Princess Eugenie’s royal wedding in 2018 when guests battled the wind to keep it from stealing their headpieces or ruffling their skirts.
Even the open-top carriage journey for the bride and groom was postponed because of the weather, so Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank boarded the Scottish State Coach instead.

On the yearly occasion, Princess Kate and Queen Camilla wore blue outfits accessorized with sentimental jewels. Princess Diana’s sapphire and diamond earrings and a Prince of Wales.
Kate wore a feathered brooch that was a gift from King Charles, connected to her and Prince William’s new titles, while she wore an Erdem navy peplum jacket and skirt in public.
With a feathered Philip Treacy beret and a sapphire and diamond brooch that belonged to the late Queen Elizabeth, Camilla opted for a blue wool crepe dress and coat by Fiona Clare.
The costume was the same one she wore in November to welcome South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to the U.K. for the first state visit of King Charles’ reign, which is why it appeared familiar.
Within the historic church, the royals joined their husbands, Prince William and King Charles, Prince Edward and Sophie (the new Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh), and Princess Anne and Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence.
The Commonwealth Day Service pays tribute to the 56 nations and countries that comprise the Commonwealth. “Working in collaboration towards shared economic, environmental, social, and democratic goals, the Service seeks to highlight a vast community.
That spans every geographical region, religion, and culture, embracing the diversity of its 2.5 billion people, of which more than 60% are under 30 years old,” the palace said in a statement. This year’s theme is “Forging a Sustainable and Peaceful Shared Future.”
The 74, who presided over the service for the first time as king and gave a speech, stressed sustainability as a vital issue. The then-Prince of Wales spoke in 2022 instead of his mother, Queen Elizabeth, who could not attend the event.
The Dean of Westminster welcomed the Ngti Rnana London Mori Club members after the King and Queen Consort arrived at Westminster Abbey this year.
The procession of flags from Commonwealth member states signaled the start of the service. A specifically created Commonwealth Flag for Peace was also processed since 2023 is the Commonwealth Year of Peace.
Saxophonist Yolanda Brown, West End performers Roshani Abbey and Nuwan Hugh Perera, and the all-female Amalgamation Chorus from Cyprus all gave musical performances at the event. The Rwandan National Ballet, Urukerereza, also performed to celebrate Rwanda’s status as the current Commonwealth Chair-in-Office.
Last year brought a return to the Commonwealth Day Service, which was canceled in 2021 owing to the coronavirus pandemic and replaced with a lesser ceremony.
One of the final occasions the royal family visited in 2020 before the epidemic triggered lockdown measures was the Commonwealth Service; however, they were already cautious by avoiding shaking hands at the service.
The 2020 service was also Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s last joint appearance with the family before they stepped aside from their positions as working royals and traveled to California.
Since then, they have returned to the country for the late monarch’s funeral ceremonies in September and Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June 2022. In April 2021, Prince Harry also went to the funeral of his grandfather, Prince Philip.
