Georgia OL Devin Willock Dies: A car accident early Sunday morning in Athens killed football player Devin Willock and a member of the recruiting staff, the university said in a statement. This past season, Willock, a redshirt sophomore from New Milford, New Jersey, started in two games on the offensive line.
The university says that Chandler LeCroy, who worked in recruiting, was also killed. “The whole Georgia family is heartbroken over the tragic deaths of football player Devin Willock and football staff member Chandler LeCroy,” a university statement said. “Two other football players were also hurt in the accident.
They are both in stable condition, and medical staff will continue to check on them. “Devin and Chandler were two extraordinary people who were very important to the University of Georgia, our football team, and our athletic department. We ask everyone to pray for their families during this adamant time.”
Greg Sankey, the commissioner of the SEC, and Nolan Smith, a senior linebacker for the Bulldogs, responded to the news on Twitter. In a statement, the Athens-Clarke County Police said that the accident happened around 2:45 a.m. ET on Sunday and only involved one car.
Police said their initial investigation showed that a 2021 Ford Expedition went off Barnett Shoals Road in the outside lane and hit two power poles and several trees. Police say Willock died at the scene. He was 20. LeCroy, who was driving, was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
A male passenger, age 21, got minor injuries, and a female passenger, age 26, got severe injuries. The accident happened just hours after the Bulldogs had a parade and ceremony at Sanford Stadium to celebrate winning back-to-back national championships.
Monday night in Los Angeles, at the College Football Playoff National Championship, Georgia beat TCU 65-7. In a statement, the university said, “The UGA Athletic Association will work with our medical team as well as our mental health and performance staff to make sure that we are giving our staff and student-athletes the best support possible as they deal with this grief.”
“At this time, we have nothing else to say, but we ask that everyone continue to pray for those involved.” Willock, 6 feet 7 inches tall and weighing 335 pounds, played in all 15 games for the Bulldogs last season. He started at right guard in wins against Tennessee and Kentucky.
