The Broadway performance “Funny Girl” has set a closure date. Since its performances began in April 2022, the musical revival has drawn sold-out crowds.
On Thursday, the program revealed that it would end on September 3. Lea Michele, the show’s star and the new Fanny Brice, will remain with the project until its conclusion.
The cast of “Funny Girl” is nearing the end of their time in the theater. The Broadway revival’s run has been extended; however, the production will have its final performance on Sunday, September 3, 2023.
Even though the revival of “Funny Girl” debuted in April 2022, Beanie Feldstein’s portrayal of Fanny Brice didn’t end until almost exactly one year after Michele joined the cast.
Nevertheless, she and Jane Lynch, who Tovah Feldshuh replaced as Fanny’s mother, left the show in August due to the performance’s unfavorable reviews and underwhelming audience response.
If the casting changes hadn’t occurred, “Funny Girl” would have ended sooner. But, since last September, box office results have improved, and the August Wilson Theater has continued to have a whole house, breaking many records in the process.
The Broadway revival will have played 599 performances and 30 previews by the time the cast, which stars Jared Grimes as Eddie Ryan and Ramin Karimloo as Nicky Arnstein, takes its final bow.
As previously reported, “Funny Girl” will start its tour in September in Providence, Rhode Island, then visit more than 30 other locations in North America.
“Funny Girl” follows Brice on her improbable rise to fame and her stormy relationship with gambler Nicky Arnstein. The musical features theater classics like “Don’t Rain on My Parade,” “I’m the Greatest Star,” and “People.”

In a unique arrangement, Julie Benko, a fan favorite at the August Wilson Theater, performs the role of Fanny Brice every Thursday while Michele is out.
With Barbra Streisand as the lead, the musical made its Broadway debut in 1964 and won numerous Tony nominations. For the first time in 58 years, “Funny Girl” will perform on the Great White Way thanks to the revival.
Michele had big shoes to fill, but many have praised her performance and likened it favorably to Streisand’s breakout role. “Michele can remove herself sufficiently from Streisand’s language to assume ownership — or at least to become a wise guardian — of the material,” Frank Rizzo said in Variety’s review.
