The College Board announced on Tuesday that it would introduce a revised curriculum for the AP African American Studies course that Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration had forbidden from being offered in Florida high schools.
The foundation managing the Advanced Placement program across the country declared that it would “issue the official framework” for an AP African American Studies course on February 1; the subject has reportedly been developing since March.
In a letter to the College Board this month, the DeSantis administration rejected the course, stating, “As presented, the substance of this course is strangely antithetical to Florida law and severely lacks educational value.”
When asked if Florida’s rejection of the course was the cause of the change, a College Board spokesman could not provide an answer.
Before making its courses more widely available, the organization had stated that it was piloting the system at 60 high schools and regularly gathered feedback.
The College Board stated on Tuesday that “the official course framework integrates this feedback and determines what students will encounter on the AP Exam for college credit and placement.”
Although the adjustments have not yet been made public, the Florida Education Department, which had previously opposed the curriculum, said it welcomed them.
The agency’s spokesperson, Alex Lanfranconi, said, “We are delighted the College Board has recognized that the first filed course curriculum is flawed, and we are encouraged to see the College Board indicate a willingness to improve.”
Due to Florida’s adamant opposition to identity politics and indoctrination, AP courses are standardized nationwide. As a result, students nationwide will have access to unbiased, historically correct methods.
The removal of material on subjects “that contradict our laws,” such as critical race theory, Black queer studies, and intersectionality, was anticipated, according to Lanfranconi.
Even as recently as Monday, DeSantis, re-elected in November and is viewed as a potential 2024 presidential candidate, protested the inclusion of information about queer theory.
“Who would assert that queer theory is a significant aspect of Black history? Someone is using our children to advance an agenda, “added DeSantis.
“The fact that they talk about intersectionality and the abolition of jails indicates that they have political objectives. For Florida’s rules, that is the wrong side of the line.”
DeSantis have prioritized education and other social issues for his administration. The “Stop WOKE Act,” which limits how race and gender are discussed in schools, was enacted by him last year.
DeSantis’ resistance to the AP course was deemed “incomprehensible” by the White House last week. He wants to prevent the study of Black Americans, according to White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, who made the statement at a briefing. “AP European History wasn’t blocked,”
