Austin Butler is paying tribute to singer-songwriter Lisa Marie Presley after her death at 54 this week. “My heart is completely shattered for Riley, Finley, Harper, and Priscilla at the tragic and unexpected loss of Lisa Marie,” the Elvis star said in a statement to EW on Saturday.
“I am eternally grateful for the time I was lucky enough to be near her bright light and will forever cherish the quiet moments we shared. Her warmth, her love, and her authenticity will always be remembered.”
Presley, the only child of rock and roll legend Elvis Presley, died Thursday in Calabasas, Calif., at the home of her ex-husband Danny Keough. It is thought that she died of a heart attack. They had two children: Benjamin Keough, who died by suicide in 2020, and Riley Keough, an actress.
After playing The King in Baz Luhrmann’s 2022 biopic, he became close with Lisa Marie and her mother, Priscilla Presley. Just two days before she died, Presley and her mother went to the Golden Globes to support the film. When Butler won Best Actor in a Drama Motion Picture, it made Presley’s mother cry.
Butler took a moment after getting the award to thank Lisa Marie and Priscilla. He said, “I want to thank our incredible producers and Warner Bros. and the Presley family,” “Thank you, guys. Thank you for opening your hearts, your memories, and your home to me. Lisa Marie, Priscilla, I love you forever.”
Presley also said nice things about Butler and how he acted as her father. In the 20/20 special, Exclusively Elvis: A Special Edition, she said, “It’s almost as if he channeled him,” in the unique Exclusively Elvis: A Special Edition of 20/20. “He put everything he had — his heart, his soul, everything he had — into researching, reading, watching, learning. He honored him in every way possible.”

In a May Instagram post, she said that Butler’s performance was “unprecedented” and “done accurately and respectfully” She also said, “If he doesn’t get an Oscar for this, I will eat my own foot.”
Luhrmann posted a touching tribute to Presley on social media Friday, which led to Butler’s statement. “Her sudden, shocking loss has devastated people all around the world,” the director wrote. “Lisa Marie, we will miss your warmth, your smile, your love.”
Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, married to Hanks, said in a tribute, “We are heartbroken over the loss of Lisa Marie Presley. Absolutely broken.” She is also survived by her twin daughters, Harper and Finley Lockwood, as well as her daughter Riley and her mother, Priscilla.
