Charles White Dies: Charles Raymond White was an American football player who played in the National Football League (NFL) for nine seasons in the 1980s. He was born on January 22, 1958, and died on January 11, 2023.
White played college football at the University of Southern California, where he won the Heisman Trophy and was named an All-American. He was the 27th player picked in the first round of the 1980 NFL Draft. He played for the Cleveland Browns and the Los Angeles Rams.

Charles White, the legendary USC running back who won the Heisman Trophy in 1979, died on Wednesday. He was 64. USC said that White had died. White is still the Trojans’ all-time leader in rushing yards with 6,245 yards.
The nine-year NFL veteran was killed in Newport Beach, California, of cancer, according to the school. John Robinson, White’s head coach at USC and with the Los Angeles Rams, said, “He was the toughest player I’ve ever coached.“
“In that way, he was very unusual. He was an outstanding player who loved the game. I remember those things the most. He was a tough guy who was also a very talented athlete. But, wow, that toughness!”

White was born in Los Angeles and was named an All-American twice. He led the Trojans to a national championship in 1978 and won the Heisman the following year when he was the team captain and led the country in rushing yards.
In his last three seasons, White led the Trojans in rushing. After his senior season, he also won the Walter Camp, Maxwell, and Pop Warner awards. He was named the most valuable player in the 1978 and 1979 Rose Bowls.
White was the third of USC’s record-setting eight Heisman winners, and the school, called “Tailback U,” still holds him in high regard. “Charles White was one of the best Trojans ever,” said Mike Bohn, who is in charge of sports at USC.
“He made USC proud when he wore the Cardinal and Gold. He was a Rose Bowl legend, a unanimous All-American twice, and he set an NCAA record.” Cleveland picked white with the 27th overall pick in the 1980 draught. He played for the Browns for five years, missing the 1983 season because of an injury.

He joined the Rams in 1985 and played for four more seasons under Robinson. He ended his NFL career with 3,075 yards rushing. After he left the NFL, he worked for Robinson again as a coach for the USC running backs from 1993 to 1997.
Robinson had returned to the Trojans. He also worked in the administration of the Trojans’ sports teams.
