Modest Mouse Drummer Jeremiah Green Dies: American drummer and founding member of the indie rock band Modest Mouse, Jeremiah Martin Green (March 4, 1977 – December 31, 2022). On March 4, 1977, Jeremiah Martin-Green was born on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, where his father was stationed in the United States Army.
He was raised just outside of Yakima in a small town called Moxee. In 1989, he followed his family’s relocation to the Seattle area. Adam was his older brother. Green’s alcoholic father had been abusive to him as a child, but the two had reconciled as adults.
Green tried drum lessons for three months in his early teens, but his tutor failed to inspire him. He became fully absorbed in Seattle’s vibrant music scene by joining a band and frequently going to shows at night. Local bands like Treepeople and Hammerbox influenced him when he was young.
Green was initially influenced by the drumming on The Cure’s 1982 album Pornography, which was released under the Gothic rock genre. On the other hand, Green said that the Washington, DC, post-hardcore band Fugazi inspired him to form his band.

On Saturday, cancer took the life of Jeremiah Green, a founding member of Modest Mouse and the band’s drummer. He was 45. The members of Modest Mouse took to Instagram to pay tribute to their late bandmate, “Our good buddy Jeremiah passed away today. He lay down and quietly passed away.”
“Remember to be grateful for the love you have given, received, and continue to receive. Jeremiah, above all else, preached love “They (the band) Composed. Four days ago, the band announced Green had cancer on their official channels, saying that his treatment was “moving well and making a positive change.”

His mother, Carol Namatame, also appealed to followers on Christmas Day, pleading for “healing thoughts” for her “strong” and “brave” son, who she described as having stage IV cancer. In addition to lead singer Isaac Brock and bassist Eric Judy, Modest Mouse’s original lineup included Green.
The three musicians first met in Issaquah, Washington, in the early ’90s, and Up Records, an indie label located in Seattle, released their debut album in 1996. Epic Records (owned by Sony Music Entertainment) published their third studio album, The Moon & Antarctica, in 2000.
The band didn’t break through commercially until 2004 with Good News For People Who Like Bad News. The album’s first song, “Float On,” was a top ten smash on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart and a Grammy Award nominee for Best Rock Song that same year.
During this time, Green temporarily left the band and returned before the end of 2004, when he stopped performing on all albums save Good News. The band released their newest album in June of 2021, their seventh studio effort.

They will be touring in celebration of the 25th anniversary of their second album, The Lonesome Crowded West, which they announced in November. For his chemo treatments, Green reportedly took a break.
Ex-Modest Mouse guitarist Johnny Marr paid his respects on Twitter, writing, “Jeremiah Green, the great. My best bud, fellow musician genius, and bandmate, “along with an old photograph of Green. Lauren Green, Green’s wife, and their son, Wilder, will miss him dearly.
