American college football coach Michael Charles Leach (March 9, 1961 – December 12, 2022) was most known for his work in Division I FBS. His NCAA record-breaking air raid offense was conceptualized and implemented under his watch, and he was named national coach of the year twice.

From 2000 through 2009, he served as head coach at Texas Tech University, where he amassed the most victories of any coach in program history. He then went on to Washington State University, where he coached from 2012 till this year and amassed the third-most wins of any coach in school history.

After that, he spent two years as a coach at Mississippi State until passing away in 2022. Leach and Hal Mumme created the air raid, a spread offense that relied heavily on passing to several receivers. At the same time, Leach was offensive coordinator at Iowa Wesleyan, Valdosta State, and Kentucky in the 1990s.

Mike Leach is the child of Frank and Sandra Leach, who gave birth to him in Susanville, California. Frank Leach was a forester. Thus, the family moved about a lot when Leach was growing up. They eventually settled in Cody, Wyoming. Leach grew up in the Mormon faith.

When he was a kid in Cody, he joined Boy Scout Troop 58 and eventually became an Eagle Scout. Leach attended and graduated from Cody High School in 1979. He played football there from 1975 to 1978 and was later recruited to play for Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah.

A high school ankle ailment prevented him from playing football in college, so he switched to rugby. Leach maintained a tight relationship with the football team, even attending some film room sessions. BYU’s pass-heavy offense was led by quarterbacks Marc Wilson, Jim McMahon, and Steve Young and offensive coordinator Norm Chow.

This style of play was unusual for collegiate football at the time. In 1983, Leach completed his undergraduate degree in American studies. In Malibu, California, Pepperdine University’s School of Law is where Leach obtained his J.D. in 1986.

Additionally, he is widely recognized as a leading sports coach because of his 1988 Master of Sports Science degree from the United States Sports Academy in Daphne, Alabama. Leach is also well-known for his claims that the American student loan system is rigged.

Mike and Sharon Leach were married for over 30 years. Both met and fell in love at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Sharon explained to the Seattle Times in 2012 that the pair’s first date was unplanned, and they only went out because Mike was hungry.

“He presumably had the two-for-one vouchers, and I was the freebie,” she said to the press. Sharon worked as a full-time administrative assistant and legal secretary for about 14 years before she quit in 1996 to devote herself to her family.

Sharon said to Sports Illustrated in 2014, “I don’t think many people appreciate just how many hours are spent coaching and recruiting a college football team,” referring to Mike’s work commitments.

I learned long ago that it was Mike’s responsibility to coach and mine to do everything else. That was fine with me. I had the same enthusiasm for college football as he did for coaching.
