The youngest of five children born to Olive Grace (]1913-1968), the concertmistress of the Hamilton Symphony Orchestra, and Charles Patrick (Pat) Short (1909-1970), a corporate officer with the Canadian steel corporation Stelco, Short was born on March 26, 1950, in Hamilton, Ontario.
They attended Catholic school together as a family. David (now deceased), Michael, and Brian was his older brothers, while Nora was his older sister. Short’s dad was a stowaway during the Irish War of Independence; he was an Irish Catholic emigrant from Crossmaglen, South Armagh, in Northern Ireland.
