Jordan Brister Passed Away: A senior in high school died after having a heart attack and being found unresponsive in the school bathroom, his family says. Jordan Brister, who was 18 years old, died on January 8 after having a heart attack on January 3 at Las Vegas’s Amplus Academy, according to a statement from the school that was shared by NBC affiliate KSNV.
His family told KSNV that he was found dead in the school bathroom after gym class. His family says that by the time he was found, there was nothing that emergency workers could do to save him. In a statement, the public charter school said that its staff helped Brister until paramedics arrived by giving him “emergency medical care.“
The Clark County Coroner’s Office told KSNV that they are still looking into the exact cause of Brister’s death. Lacie Cowley, a family friend who set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for Brister’s funeral, wrote that Brister “suddenly and unexpectedly had a cardiac arrest while at school, and no one knows why.“
“Words can’t describe what the Brister family is going through, and there will never be enough answers to why this is happening,” she said. “He was a great kid who loved life to the fullest,” Cowley says that Brister planned to join the military after he graduated from high school.
When the school posted on Facebook on January 9 about Brister’s death, they also told his family how sorry they were. Brister had a heart attack the same week that another high school student in Las Vegas died.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal says that Ashari Hughes, 16, died on January 5 after having “a medical episode” after a flag football game at Desert Oasis High School. Dr. Adam Kean at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis says that sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death in high school athletes.

Last year, Drew Strasser, a high school tennis player, went into cardiac arrest at practice. His teammate gave him CPR and his coach ran to get an automated external defibrillator (AED) to shock his heart, which brought him back to life.
“Even though it is the main cause, it is very rare, which is important,” Kean told TODAY in October. “We think that one in 30,000 children dies of a heart attack every year, which sounds like a very small number. But that’s still about 2,000 children each year in the United States.“

In adults, sudden cardiac arrest is usually caused by coronary artery disease. In children and teens, however, it can be caused by conditions like hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, long QT syndrome, or catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia.
Both teens died after Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, who was 24 years old, had a heart attack on the field after making a tackle against the Bengals on January 2. Hamlin was given CPR on the field and taken to a hospital in Cincinnati, where he stayed until his condition got better enough on January 9 to be moved to a hospital in Buffalo.
