She was born with British and American citizenship because her parents, art dealer Francis Lenn Taylor (1897–1968) and retired stage actress Sara Sothern (born Sara Viola Warmbrodt, 1895–1994), were both born in Arkansas City, Kansas, and were both US citizens.

In 1929, they moved to London and opened an art gallery on Bond Street. That same year, their first child, a son named Howard, was born. During Taylor’s childhood, his family lived in London. Artists like Augustus John and Laura Knight and politicians like Colonel Victor Cazalet were among their friends.
