TMZ said that Dr. Dre had a brain aneurysm on January 5, 2021, and that he was sent to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California (Jan. 4). He had recently been admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) for further testing to discover the cause of the bleeding in his brain.

Dre used Instagram to reassure his followers that he was doing fine just one day after being admitted to the hospital. On January 5, 2021, he was also said to be in “stable” condition. Dr. Dre expressed gratitude to his “family, friends, and fans for their attention and well wishes.” I’m doing fantastic, thanks to God and my excellent medical staff. Soon, I will be able to leave the hospital and return home.

Throughout this, Dre was divorcing his wife, Nicole Young. At the end of June 2020, just over six months before Dr. Dre’s hospitalization, Nicole filed for divorce from him. Since Dre and Nicole did not have a prenuptial agreement, their divorce proceeding soon descended into chaos (although the two disagreed about this matter). When Nicole filed for divorce in September 2020, she asked for spousal support of approximately $2 million per month, plus another $5 million to cover legal bills.

In July 2021, it was decided that Dre would pay Nicole spousal support for $3.5 million per year, or slightly less than $300,000 per month. Nicole said Dre threatened her with a gun on two separate occasions in her court filings (in 2000 and 2001). According to her, the rapper assaulted her during a fight in 2016. Dre, meanwhile, has called Nicole’s allegations that he “abused [or] threatened” her “blatant falsehoods.”

Dr. Dre and Nicole settled their divorce at year’s end of 2021, with Dr. Dre agreeing to pay Nicole $100 million.
