Assault Weapons Ban: On Tuesday, Illinois’ Democratic Governor J.B. Pritzker signed a bill that bans guns and high-capacity magazines in various ways. The governor’s office said in a news release that the new law limits the sale of high-capacity ammunition magazines, bans “switches” that let handguns fire rounds automatically, and “extends the ability of courts to stop dangerous people from having a gun through firearm restraining orders.“
The ban goes into effect immediately, but people who already have these weapons don’t have to give them up. The bill passed the state Senate 34 to 20 on Monday and the House 68 to 41 on Tuesday, mostly along party lines. It is now on Pritzker’s desk. In May 2022, the governor signed HB 4383. This law says people can’t sell or own “ghost guns,” self-assembled guns often put together with parts bought online. It also ensures that all firearms have serial numbers, making it easier for law enforcement to track them.
