Ronald Dion DeSantis, born September 14, 1978, is an American politician and lawyer who has been the 46th governor of Florida since 2019. As a Republican, DeSantis represented Florida’s 6th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2013 to 2018.
Born in Jacksonville, DeSantis lived most of his childhood in Dunedin, Florida. He graduated from both Yale University and Harvard Law School. DeSantis joined the US Navy in 2004 and was promoted to lieutenant.
He then worked as a legal advisor for SEAL Team One and was sent to Iraq in 2007. When he returned to the U.S. a year later, the U.S. Department of Justice put DeSantis to work as a Special Assistant U.S. attorney at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Middle District of Florida.
He held this job until he was honorably discharged in 2010. DeSantis was first elected to Congress in 2012, beating his Democratic opponent Heather Beaven. During his time in office, he helped start the Freedom Caucus and was an ally of President Donald Trump.
DeSantis often spoke out against Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. He briefly ran for the U.S. Senate in 2016 but dropped out when the incumbent senator, Marco Rubio, ran for reelection.
In August 2018, DeSantis won the Republican nomination for governor. He chose state representative Jeanette Nuez as his running mate. The close results of the general election between DeSantis and the Democratic nominee, Tallahassee mayor Andrew Gillum, led to a machine recount.
DeSantis was declared the winner with a 0.4% margin of victory. During the COVID-19 pandemic in Florida, when DeSantis was governor, he refused to impose restrictions like face mask laws, orders to stay at home, and vaccination requirements.
In May 2021, he signed a bill into law that said businesses, schools, cruise ships, and government agencies couldn’t ask for proof of vaccination. DeSantis cut spending in Florida, which led to a record budget surplus for the state, and he worked on recovery after Hurricanes Ian and Nicole.
In the 2022 Florida governor’s race, he beat Charlie Crist considerably. His 19.4% victory margin was the state’s largest in 40 years. Likewise, now we can see people searching for How Tall is Ron Desantis?
