Her most considerable international success came with the single “Love Is a Battlefield” (1983), which peaked at No. 1 in the Netherlands, No. 2 in Australia, and No. 5 on the US Hot 100. Live from Earth, the album it was taken from, was her best-selling record in Australia, Germany, and the Netherlands.
With the album’s lead track, “We Belong,” she had a number five hit on the US Hot 100 and a top 10 hit in many other countries after its 1984 release. Although her 1985 album Seven the Hard Way didn’t do as well commercially, it did produce two rock-influenced singles: “Invincible,” which reached the top 10 in North America, and “Sex as a Weapon.”
Wide Awake in Dreamland (1988), her second album, saw a jump in sales in Canada and Australia and became her most successful album in the United Kingdom. All Fired Up, the album’s rock single, did well in all three markets. Between 1991 and 2003, she put out four more albums.

Originally named Patricia Mae Andrzejewski, Pat Benatar entered this world on January 10, 1953, in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, New York City. Her mother, Mildred, worked as a beautician, while her father, Andrew (Andrzej) Andrzejewski (1926-2009), worked in the sheet metal industry.
Her father’s family was originally from Poland, and her mother’s family was from Germany, England, and Ireland. Lindenhurst is a little community in Babylon on Long Island, and her family recently relocated to North Hamilton Avenue.
After taking an interest in the performing arts, she took voice lessons and gave her first solo performance of “It Must Be Spring” at Daniel Street Elementary School, where she was in the fourth grade.
She was active in musical theatre while attending Lindenhurst Senior High School (1967–1970), where she played Queen Guinevere in a production of Camelot and sang at the homecoming parade, Christmas tree lighting, and recorded a solo of “The Christmas Song” with the Lindenhurst High School Choir as a senior.
Originally intending to study coloratura at the Juilliard School, she ultimately decided to major in health teaching at Stony Brook. She attended Stony Brook for a year before leaving to marry her high school love, Dennis Benatar, who was drafted into the United States Army and served at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, Fort Devens, Massachusetts, and Fort Lee, Virginia, beginning in 1973. She became Rick Newman’s manager after he saw her perform “Rock-a-Bye Your Baby With a Dixie Melody,” a song made famous by Judy Garland.
She was a staple at the Catch a Rising Star nightclub for the next three years. During her performing downtime, she recorded jingles for local businesses, including Pepsi-Cola. Pat joined Chrysalis Records as a recording artist in 1978. Although Pat and Dennis separated soon after, she continued to use his surname.

In August of 1980, Benatar released “Crimes of Passion,” her second album. Her debut hit, “Hit Me With Your Best Shot,” reached number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and sold over a million copies in the United States. Benatar’s first Grammy was for “Best Female Rock Vocal Performance” in February 1981.
In August of 1981, her third album, “Precious Time,” won her a second Grammy and went straight to the top of the US Top LP chart. Her song “Love is a Battlefield,” released in 1983, became a smash hit.
