Bill Webster Dies: William “Bill” Holcomb Webster, a former state representative, died peacefully on January 10 at the age of 90, with his family by his side. Webster was born in Rochester, Minnesota, on October 7, 1932.
When he was a child, his family moved to Weld County, Colorado. He went to school in Greeley from kindergarten through high school. After graduating from high school, Webster went to Colorado State University for a short time before leaving to join the Army and serve at Fort Richardson in Alaska.
He returned to CSU but dropped out again to follow his dream of working with livestock. He grew his herd of cattle from 3,000 to 25,000. Webster got that degree, a bachelor of animal science, when he was 81.
He met the love of his life, Sylvia, when they were both still in high school at the Greeley Rodeo. She already knew his family because his father, Dr. Bill Webster, fixed her up after a bad fall when she was three.
They married on August 9, 1953, and stayed together for 66 years until she died on January 20, 2020. Webster started the Webster Land & Cattle Co. and Webster Feed Lots, Inc., and “his innovative feeding techniques” put Weld County on the map, according to a county statement.
In 2016, the Greeley Tribune wrote a story about these changes, which included using computers to manage livestock and making “flaked corn” for animal feed. Cooking the cornflakes makes them more accessible for cattle to eat and digest.

This made his feedlot 10 percent more efficient and cut waste by 10 percent. According to the Tribune, it was the first commercial feedlot to use this method. Webster was first elected as a county commissioner in 1991. He did this job for two terms.
He was first elected to the Colorado House in 1998 to represent House District 48. In 2000, he was re-elected. He was on the committees for agriculture and local government in the House.
His laws primarily dealt with agricultural issues, like exempting dairy from sales and use taxes, giving the state veterinary commission the job of keeping livestock from getting sick, and changing the rules about how much fat can be in whipped butter.

In 2012, Perry was chosen to represent the nearby House District 49. In 2020, she was selected as a Weld County Commissioner for the whole county. Webster was put into the FFA Colorado Agriculture Hall of Fame in 2017 for his work in agriculture.
“There wasn’t a man who fed a hoof who didn’t know Bill Webster,” said then-Agriculture Commissioner Don Brown at Webster’s induction. He is survived by Wade (who is married to Ann), Dan (who is married to Dawn), and Perry, as well as 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
