Dorothy Pitman Hughes Die: A funeral home has confirmed in Georgia and her longtime colleague and friend Gloria Steinem that Dorothy Pitman Hughes, co-founder of one of the most important feminist periodicals, has passed away.
According to Sconiers Funeral Home, Hughes, co-founder of Ms. Magazine, passed away on December 1 at 84 in Tampa, Florida. Hughes “went away peacefully… at the house of her daughter and son-in-law, Delethia and Jonas Malmsten,” as the obituary put it. Dorothy Pitman Hughes Die, Co-Founder of Ms. Magazine, Dies At 84.
The funeral home stated that Hughes, born in Lumpkin, Georgia, in 1938, relocated to New York at 19 and worked as a house cleaner and nightclub singer. Hughes “established a multiracial cooperative daycare center” by the late 1960s, drawing the interest of Steinem, the future co-founder of Ms. Magazine, who profiled the business in New York Magazine.
According to the obituary, Steinem and Hughes first spoke publicly about the Women’s Movement shortly after Hughes’ death. Steinem sent a tribute to her pal on Instagram this week. Steinem remarked on how fortunate she felt to have Dorothy as a friend and co-conspirator.
She was the one who first pushed me into public speaking, and we toured the country together for many years. She said, “Because of her commitment to children’s rights, racial equality, and economic freedom, the world is a better place today than it was when she was here.”
Dorothy “inspired” Gloria “to start a female-operated media source, Ms. Magazine,” according to the obituary. Despite its humble beginnings as a “sample insert in New York magazine” in the 1970s, Ms. Magazine has now become a “landmark institution in both women’s rights and American journalism,” as stated on the publication’s official website.
“More than a magazine, Ms. Magazine describes itself as “a movement.” According to the obituary, Hughes and Steinem established “the Women’s Action Alliance, a pioneering national information center that specialized in nonsexist, multiracial children’s education,” in 1971.
