After the former president, Donald Trump reshared a social media video suggesting that Florida governor Ron DeSantis acted inappropriately near minors when he worked as a private school teacher, DeSantis responded on Wednesday to Trump’s most recent accusation.
A picture from a piece published in 2021 by the Hill Reporter, a blog operated by a Democratic super PAC, is included in the post. According to the blog, the picture shows DeSantis partying with some kids in 2002.
DeSantis occasionally “hung around at parties with seniors,” according to a November New York Times article, when he was a 23-year-old Georgia teacher.
The original uploader on Truth Social on Tuesday described the image as “quite nasty.” The original idea and message were reposted by Trump, who also added, “No way?” When questioned about the attack during a press conference on Wednesday in Ocala, Florida, DeSantis denied it.
“I spend my time delivering results for the people of Florida and fighting against Joe Biden; that’s how I spend my time,” DeSantis said. “I don’t spend my time trying to smear other Republicans.”
Trump’s criticism of DeSantis came the same day the governor moderated a panel discussion on libel. He said the Florida legislature should make it simpler to sue media organizations for defamation.
DeSantis said he’s in a different position as governor when questioned about how the proposed law may handle Trump’s criticism at his press conference.
“It’s different for me because I can fight back, and people know I face defamatory stuff every day I’ve been governor. That’s just the nature of it,” he said. “But I have a platform to fight back, and a lot of these other people that are [smaller], they don’t necessarily have a platform to fight back.”
DeSantis, who is considered a potential 2024 Republican presidential candidate as well, has come under fire from Trump, who is seeking the White House a third time. Polls frequently ask who would prevail in a hypothetical primary contest between the two candidate
In November, shortly after DeSantis won reelection by nearly 20 points, Trump said in a statement that he was an “average” governor who benefited from “great Public Relations.”
DeSantis had been disregarding these remarks, particularly the criticism from November, while he has also gotten more outspoken in his defense.
Last month, DeSantis referred to how, unlike the prior president, he had won a second term in an apparent jab at Trump for criticizing his management of the COVID-19 outbreak.
When asked about Trump’s remarks during a press conference on education, DeSantis responded, “You take a crisis scenario like COVID — you know, the wonderful thing about it is when you’re an elected executive, you have to make all kinds of judgments, you need to steer that ship.” And the good news is that the electorate has the power to judge whether they want to elect you again or not.
