Coastal Carolina QB Injury: Grayson McCall is a quarterback for the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers in American football. He was born on December 13, 2000. At age 12, McCall joined a traveling team of Little League all-stars that played in a tournament in Cooperstown, New York, that was shown on TV.

McCall quit baseball before he got to high school. McCall went to high school in Indian Trail, North Carolina, at Porter Ridge High School. He passed for 3,863 yards and 34 touchdowns in high school and ran for 3,003 yards and 41 touchdowns.

He was a two-star recruit and the 2889th player in the class of 2019 to come out of high school. On December 19, 2018, he chose to play college football for Coastal Carolina University over Army, Chattanooga, Eastern Kentucky, and Gardner-Webb.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Three-time Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year Grayson McCall, who entered the transfer portal this month but stayed with the Chanticleers for the Birmingham Bowl, got hurt Tuesday night in a 53–29 loss to East Carolina.

McCall was named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year three times. On what is likely to be McCall’s last play as a Coastal Carolina player, the quarterback ran for a touchdown from 9 yards out. He was hit as he fell into the end zone and never played again.

In his post-game news conference, Chanticleers interim coach Chad Staggs said he didn’t know much about the injury other than that it was “upper body.” Jarrett Guest replaced McCall in the first half, and Guest played most of the second half.

Coastal Carolina (9-4) took the lead, 14-10 when McCall scored on the run. On the other hand, the Chanticleers were behind by 24-14 at the half. For the Pirates (8-5), Holton Ahlers stole the show by throwing five touchdown passes and scoring six touchdowns.

Ahlers was named the most valuable player of the game after throwing for 300 yards on 26 of 38 passes, running for 37 yards and a touchdown, and catching a pass for 14 yards for the Pirates.

McCall got hurt late in the season and missed three games. Before he got hurt, he played well. He completed 11 of 14 passes for 75 yards and ran four times for 12 yards. His 25-yard pass to Ivy Turon made it possible for Reese White to score on a 1-yard run.

After a great career with the Chanticleers, he put his name in the transfer portal earlier this month. He sat out his first season on campus in 2019, but as a redshirt freshman, he made a big splash in 2020.

He was one of the finalists for the Manning Award and one of the semifinalists for the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award. He was named the league’s Freshman of the Year and the first-team All-Sun Belt Conference quarterback. This was his first time being named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year.

During the 2020 season, McCall threw 2,488 yards, 26 touchdowns, and three interceptions. He also ran for 569 yards and seven touchdowns in 11 games. In 2021, he kept up his excellent play by throwing for 2,873 yards, 27 touchdowns, and three interceptions.

He also scored four touchdowns by running the ball. He won the league’s best player award again, and he was one of the finalists for the Maxwell Award, which goes to the best college football player. This season, McCall threw for 2,633 yards, 24 touchdowns, and only two picks.

He was named the league’s best player for the last time. He has played for three years but can still play for two more years if he doesn’t use the extra year the NCAA gave him because of COVID-19 restrictions during the 2020 season.
