Cher Announces Death of Mother Georgia Holt, Aged 96

According to Cher, Georgia Holt, Cher’s mother, passed away at 96.

The 76-year-old singer for the band Believe wrote on Twitter early Sunday morning: “Mom has gone.”

Following several months of health concerns, including hospitalization for pneumonia in September, Holt passed away. Throughout this time, Cher had been taking care of her, updating her status on social media to indicate that Holt was “getting better.”

The family has not made any more statements.

Holt was born Jackie Jean Crouch in Kensett, Arkansas, in 1926, to baker Roy Malloy Crouch, age 21, and Lynda Inez Gulley, age 13.

After learning to play the guitar from her father and discovering a passion for singing and performing, Holt traveled to Los Angeles in 1946 to pursue her dream of becoming a famous musician.

The 19-year-old had just separated from her first husband, John Sarkisian, and was carrying Cher at the time.

Her mother had urged her to terminate the pregnancy, but she had refused and decided to leave it alone.

Since then, Holt and Cher have been somewhat inseparable, with Holt growing her career while still playing a significant role in Cher’s.

Significant events include producing her country music album in 1982 (though it wasn’t legally released until 2013) and appearing in an I Love Lucy episode.

Cher and Holt shared such a close relationship that the singer made a documentary on Holt’s life called Dear Mom, Love Cher.

Most recently, Holt guest starred in RuPaul’s Drag Race season 6 with grandson Chaz Bono.

The two appeared as “guests” on a fictitious chat show hosted by the rival drag queens in the episode, Queens Of Talk.

In her lifetime, Holt was wed six times in total, including a second marriage to Sarkisian that took place 19 years after their first divorce.

Spencer has been her companion since 1976, but they were never legally wed.
