Efron grew up in the California town of Arroyo Grande. David Efron, his father, works as an electrical engineer at Diablo Canyon Power Plant. Starla Baskett, his mother, also works there as an administrative assistant. Efron has a younger brother named Dylan and a younger half-sister named Olivia.

He has said that he grew up in a middle-class family and had a “normal childhood.” His last name comes from the Hebrew language. His grandfather on his father’s side is Jewish, and Efron has said that he is Jewish, even though he was raised as an atheist and didn’t do any religious things as a child.

Efron has said that if he got a “B” instead of an “A” in school, he would “flip out.” He also said that he was the class clown. After that, Efron worked at The Great American Melodrama and Vaudeville theatres and started taking singing lessons.

He also went to the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts, a theatre company at Allan Hancock College, a community college in Santa Maria, California, where he performed in 2000 and 2001.
