Who Is Brandi Carlile: On June 1, 1981, Carlile was born in the little community of Ravensdale, Washington, some 30 miles outside Seattle. Carlile, her brother Jay, and her sister Tiffany spent their childhood in the woods, where they played music and constructed forts.
When she was four years old, Carlile almost lost her life to bacterial meningitis. Several times her heart stopped beating thoroughly, she fell into a coma. Carlile spent her formative years in the cities of Black Diamond, Maple Valley, and Auburn within the county of King in the state of Washington’s Sumner and also spent some time in West Seattle.
Carlile, who learned to sing as a child, had her theatrical debut at the tender age of eight, performing country tunes. Carlile began singing and playing the guitar at age 15, but she first performed “Tennessee Flat Top Box” by Johnny Cash with her mother, Teresa Carlile, when she was only eight.
Carlile took a job as an Elvis impersonator’s backing singer in his teenage years. Carlile claims that she was given an ADHD label as a teenager. She started at Tahoma High School but left to focus on her singing career instead. Carlile taught herself piano after hearing Elton John’s songs, and by the time she was 17, she had also mastered the guitar.

By the Way, I Forgive You, her sixth album, was released in February of 2018 and was met with widespread acclaim. It earned the top spot on Billboard’s Top Rock Albums list and the top five on the Billboard 200, all of which were career highs for her.
Her seventh studio album, In These Silent Days, debuted at number eleven on the Billboard 200 and number one on the Billboard Top Rock Albums and Top Folk Albums charts, respectively. Through the years, pop, rock, alternative country, and folk have all been used to describe Carlile’s music.
Regarding her musical aesthetic, she once said, “I’ve gone through all sorts of vocal phases, from pop to blues to R&B, but no matter what I do, I simply can’t get the country and western out of my voice.” Carlile has been an active member of various activism campaigns, advocating for topics ranging from health awareness to LGBT rights to women’s empowerment.

At the beginning of her career, Carlile played in Seattle music clubs alongside the Hanseroth twins, Phil and Tim. When Columbia Records heard the demos of the songs Carlile had been recording on her own time, they signed her in 2004.
Carlile’s 2005 self-titled album featured both these early recordings and new material. Throw It All Away” and “What Can I Say” were re-recorded for re-release by Columbia Records in 2006.
The album was well received, and she was named one of Rolling Stone’s “10 Artists to Watch in 2005” and on similar “artists to watch” lists by Interview and Paste.
Some listeners may be wary of Carlile because, as Stephen Thomas Erlewine stated in his album review, “the cumulative effect makes her appear like a lovely, prefabricated fabrication,” what with the acclaim and the cover art that captures her at her loveliest (as if she were a cousin of Rachael Leigh Cook).

More specifically, he praised the way her “folky singer/songwriter basis merges with her art-pop proclivities” to create “music that is… lush, warm, and alluring.” This album was hugely successful, topping position #80 on the Billboard 200 and #1 on the US Folk Albums list.
The Hanseroth brothers, with whom she had previously collaborated on her first records and independent regional tours, joined her on the road soon after the album’s release, prompting her to leave Seattle.
The current core of her band consists of a close-knit trio who spent over two years honing the songs that would eventually appear on her album The Story. Carlile had toured with Ray LaMontagne, The Fray, Chris Isaak, Tori Amos, and Shawn Colvin by the end of 2006, in addition to her headlining tours.
