What Did Jose Hernandez Do?
Jose Hernandez defied all odds to become the first migrant farm worker to access space by becoming a NASA astronaut despite being denied training on multiple occasions. In 2009, while in orbit, he was the first individual to use the Spanish language on Twitter (now X) while communicating in Spanish.

Hernandez was one of four children born in Mexico to migrants. The majority of his childhood was spent traveling between Mexico and California; every March, his family entered the United States to labor in the fields before returning to Mexico for Christmas.
His early career included co-creating the first digital mammography imaging system for breast cancer detection. Following this award-winning stay, he joined the Johnson Space Center and began the astronaut recruitment process.
