Following a protracted health battle, Phil Collins had his final concert with the band Genesis.
The 71-year-old performed at the O2 Arena in London on Saturday night (March 26), saying his final goodbyes to the crowd and informing them that he must now get a legitimate job.
The band, which features guitarist-bassist Mike Rutherford and keyboardist Tony Banks, pleased rock fans when they reunited for their The Last Domino? Tour last year. This was the group’s first tour since 2007.
Genesis performed at venues in Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle, and Liverpool on their 2021 UK tour, but Covid prompted the band to cancel three of its London performances.
Collins appeared somewhat fragile during the tour, forcing the singer to perform while seated on a chair, which alarmed some fans.
What Illness Does Phil Collins Have?
Over the past ten years, Collins has experienced many health problems, starting in 2009 with a neck vertebrae injury. He suffered a performance-related injury that left him with irreparable nerve damage in his hands.
He had surgery to fix the vertebrae, but it left him with no feeling in his fingertips, making it impossible for him to hold drumsticks without tape. He soon lost the ability to play the drums that had made him famous due to the accident.
It may change in a year or so, but for the time being, I cannot play the piano or the drums.
Collins revealed in his book from 2016 that he had had an alcohol issue after retiring and getting divorced from his third wife, adding that he had been sober for three years.
The following year, he disclosed that he had type 2 diabetes and had undergone hyperbaric oxygen therapy to treat an infected diabetic abscess on his foot. He is currently wearing orthopaedic shoes after his procedure.
He now performs on stage while seated in a chair and walks with the aid of a cane. Collins also has acute pancreatitis, which causes the pancreas to swell and suddenly inflame.
At a press conference in 2016, he discussed the issue and said: “Within months, you’re drinking vodka from the fridge in the morning and falling in front of the kids, you know. “However, that was something I went through, and I was fortunate to make it through it.
Will Phil Collins Continue Touring?
Given his ongoing medical concerns, Collins acknowledged that this tour would probably be his last.
Despite the emotional nature of the evening, the celebrity maintained a positive attitude during the last performance at London’s O2 on Saturday. It’s the final show for Genesis, and this is the last stop on our tour, he informed the crowd. After Tonight, everyone must find employment.
The caption states, “Tonight marks the end of an era. Witnessing this final performance was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I will always treasure. Never-ending gratitude is not even close to being adequate.
“There was so much love left on that O2 stage, and much more love was exchanged among the audience members who didn’t want it to end.
I want to thank @genesis band for the memories, my dad for being such an inspiration, and @nic Collins for making me the happiest sister ever. Fifty years of music later, and still more generations to celebrate you long after this tour is over.
Phil Collins’ Current Health Condition!
The drummer’s health has been declining for the past 15 years due to nerve damage brought on by an upper neck vertebral fracture. In 2017, he began walking with a cane and sat in a chair to perform on stage.
He’s already discussed his health issues. When news of Genesis’ final tour surfaced, he spoke with BBC and stated:
When Collins was asked if he could play the drums like the days before, he said that he would love to, but that physical limitations prevented him from doing so. When told that he had once described the tour as “putting it to bed,” he responded:
Phil Collins’ Health Issues From The Past!
Following a recording session in Los Angeles in 2000, Phil Collins experienced his initial hearing loss in his left ear. He saw three physicians, but they all told him there was nothing they could do and the likelihood of recovery was slim.
Two years after losing his hearing, he discovered that it had been caused by a viral infection, which had been treated, and that he had regained it.
The 71-year-old also disclosed in 2017 that he had type 2 diabetes and had undergone hyperbaric oxygen therapy for the treatment of an infected diabetic abscess on his foot. After sliding into his hotel room throughout the night, he postponed two gigs. He even struck his head on a chair, causing a gash next to his eye that required stitches.
In 2009, Phil underwent surgery to fix the displaced vertebrae in his upper neck that had developed due to playing the drums during the 2007 Genesis tour. He could not feel his fingers, and the only way he could hold a drumstick was if it was strapped to his hands.
In 2014, he claimed that an unidentified nerve condition was the cause of his inability to play the drums. Collins had a spine operation in 2015, but his left hand is still incapable of playing the drums.
The primary role of Phil Collins is that of Genesis’ drummer. He launched his solo career in 1981, and between 1982 and 1990, he produced three UK and seven US number-one hits.
