Nathaniel Hackett Career: Nathaniel Hackett is an American football coach. He was born on December 19, 1979. Hackett worked for Doug Marrone for a long time as an assistant. From 2010 to 2012, he was the offensive coordinator for the NFL’s Green Bay Packers, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Buffalo Bills, and he held several positions for the college football team Syracuse Orange. In 2022, he was the head coach of the Denver Broncos, but he was fired in the middle of the season after going 4–11.
Where Was Nathaniel Hackett Born & Raised?
He was born in Fullerton, California, on December 19, 1979. His father, Paul Hackett, also coached college and NFL football. Hackett grew up around football because his father was a coach for several teams, including USC, the Cleveland Browns, the San Francisco 49ers, and the Dallas Cowboys.
He went to Blue Valley Northwest High School and the University of California at Davis. Hackett became a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity in college. He also played linebacker on the football team at his school. While still in school, he taught hip-hop dance glasses for two years.
Nathaniel Hackett Career: How Did He Start His Profession?
After working as an assistant coach for UC Davis and Stanford, Hackett joined the NFL as a good coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2006, under the direction of Jon Gruden. He worked there for two years before taking the same job with the Buffalo Bills in 2008 and 2009.
During those years, Bruce Gradkowski, Chris Simms, Jeff Garcia, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and Brian Brohm were among the quarterbacks he worked with. Syracuse hired Hackett in 2010 to coach the quarterbacks and tight ends. He would later follow Doug Marrone to Buffalo and Jacksonville. The next year, Hackett was given the job of offensive coordinator.
In 2013, the Bills hired Marrone as their head coach, and Hackett was brought back to Buffalo as the offensive coordinator. The Bills were 29th in a passing offense that year with quarterbacks EJ Manuel, Thad Lewis, and Jeff Tuel.
However, running backs C. J. Spiller and Fred Jackson helped the team run the ball well. When Kyle Orton took over for Manuel as the Bills’ quarterback the following year, the team’s passing game was better, but the running game got worse.

After the 2014 season, Marrone chose to get out of his contract with the Bills. The Jacksonville Jaguars then hired him as an offensive line and assistant head coach, and he brought Hackett with him.
In 2016, after the Jaguars fired Gus Bradley and made Doug Marrone the interim head coach, Doug Hackett was moved up from quarterbacks coach to interim offensive coordinator. Greg Olson had been the offensive coordinator before he was fired. In January 2017, he was officially given the job.
Hackett, along with quarterback Blake Bortles and running back Leonard Fournette, put together the best rushing attack in the league in 2017. This helped Jacksonville win the AFC South and go to the AFC Championship game.
Hackett was fired by Marrone on November 26, 2018, after the Jaguars lost 24–21 to the Buffalo Bills. This surprised Hackett because the Jaguars didn’t do as well the following year. They started the season 3–8.
Green Bay Packers
The Green Bay Packers hired Hackett as their offensive coordinator on January 14, 2019. He will work with head coach Matt LaFleur. With the help of star quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Hackett led the Packers to have the best-scoring offense in the league in 2020.

Vic Fangio was fired as head coach of the Denver Broncos on January 27, 2022, and Hackett was hired to take his place. Hackett’s first game as head coach was against the Seattle Seahawks. With more than a minute left in the fourth quarter, the Broncos faced a 4th-and-5 at midfield.
Even though Hackett had three timeouts, he chose to let the clock run down to 20 seconds so he could try a 64-yard field goal that could win the game. The Broncos lost 17–16 because Brandon McManus’s kick went wide left. The next day, Hackett said, “Looking back, we definitely should have gone for it.”
In week two, when the Broncos played the Houston Texans and won 16–9, Hackett was again criticized for handling the clock. After that, the Broncos hired Jerry Rosburg to help Hackett manage the game and the clock, starting with their week three game against the San Francisco 49ers.
Hackett was fired on December 26 after the Broncos lost to the Los Angeles Rams 51–14 on Christmas Day. Interim head coach Jerry Rosburg took over for Hackett. After Lou Holtz in 1976, Pete McCulley in 1978, Bobby Petrino in 2007, and Urban Meyer in 2021, he was the fifth head coach who didn’t finish his first season.
