Lemonis went to work for his grandfather’s auto dealership after his unsuccessful candidacy for politics. In 1997, AutoNation purchased that dealership. Lemonis went on to hold various sales and management positions at AutoNation. At the time, Lee Iacocca approached Lemonis and informed him that he intended to “create the largest RV chain.” Iacocca had noticed that the current business model for selling RVs in the United States was ineffective.
Lemonis was assisted in purchasing Holiday RV Superstores by Iaccoca. Lemonis was the company’s CEO from the summer of 2001 through early 2003. Lemonis then co-founded Freedom Roads and began purchasing RV dealerships. In 2006, Lemonis merged Freedom Roads with Camping World and became CEO of the new company. Lemonis, as CEO of Camping World, formed a deal with NASCAR and sponsored John Andretti and his crew.
Camping World assumed the NASCAR East Series sponsorship for the 2008-2008 season in 2007. He changed the name to the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. In 2014, Lemonis extended Camping World’s sponsorship through 2022.
Lemonis merged Camping World and Good Sam Enterprises in 2011. Lemonis was appointed CEO of that company. Camping World went public in October 2016 for $22 per share. This resulted in a $2 billion valuation for the company. Camping World stock was trading at just under $35 on July 29, 2020.
Camping World purchased the assets of Gander Mountain, a camping, fishing, and hunting goods retailer, and Overton’s, a boating superstore, in the spring of 2017. Lemonis married businesswoman Ila Penfold for the first time in 2003. They were together on and off until they finally split up in 2017. During one of the couple’s off-seasons, Lemonis dated The Real Housewives of New York City star and Skinnygirl businesswoman Bethenny Frankel.
