Ziggy Marley Career
The Seven Do Bees, a singing group, made up of Marley and his classmates, is the first documented instance of him performing music. During this time, he was given the stage name “Freddie Dic.” The moniker didn’t catch on, though, and David eventually adopted the nickname “Ziggy,” which means “little spliff” and is said to have been given to him by his father, Bob Marley. Ziggy, though, said the following to Melody Maker in 1988: “David here, but I’m a huge Bowie admirer. So I started referring to myself as Ziggy at the time of the Ziggy Stardust record, and now everyone does.”
Ziggy and his brother Stephen were frequently spotted during their father’s central performances in Jamaica and internationally in the late 1970s. The pair performed live in Kingston, Jamaica, at the One Love Peace Concert in 1978 and in Montego Bay, Jamaica, during Reggae Sunsplash II in 1979.
The Melody Makers, named after the British weekly pop/rock music newspaper Melody Maker, were founded in 1979 by Ziggy and his siblings Sharon, Cedella, and Stephen. They released their first single, “Children Playing in the Streets,” the same year. Their father composed the song for them four years prior and wrote the tune specifically for them. To support the UN’s initiatives during the International Year of the Child, all profits from the song were donated to the organization.
The first and only time The Melody Makers performed with their father on the same bill was on September 23, 1979, during the “Roots Rock Reggae” two-day concert series in Kingston’s National Arena. At the time, Ziggy was 11 years old. Other notable early musical events for Ziggy include a performance with Stephen at their father’s funeral in 1981 and the release of the Melody Makers’ second single, “What A Plot,” on the family’s Tuff Gong record label later that year. Children Playing is an unreleased album by The Melody Makers that was recorded in 1979.
Following Bob Marley’s passing in 1981, Ziggy started playing with the Wailers at different concerts across Jamaica. In 1984, the group went on tour to support the year’s release of the Bob Marley Legend compilation album. The Melody Makers’ debut album, Play the Game Right, was officially published in 1985. Conscious Party, which they released in 1988, became a huge international success and won the Grammy for Best Reggae Album. Before disbanding in 2002, Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers had five Grammy nominations and three wins.
