Robin Roberts, a co-host on the ABC morning show “Good Morning America,” surprised everyone on Monday by saying that she and her girlfriend of almost 18 years, Amber Laign, are ready to get married.
“I’m unsure what to say because I haven’t said it yet. “OK, I’m saying yes to marriage,” Roberts told motivational speaker and author Gabby Bernstein when they were talking about goals for the new year. “This year, we’re getting married.”
Roberts also said that she and Laign, whom she started dating in 2005, had talked about getting married before Laign was diagnosed with breast cancer in late 2021. However, they “put it off” for a while.
Laing, who helped start Plant Juice Oils for women’s health, finished radiation in July. In 2007, Roberts was told she had breast cancer. In 2012, she was told she had myelodysplastic syndrome, a disease of the bone marrow.
The decision to get married comes at a time when more same-sex couple households are all over the country. In November, the American Community Survey, done by the Census Bureau every year, showed that same-sex couple households in the U.S. had gone over 1 million for the first time.
