How Did Neil Diamond Start His Career?

Neil Diamond skipped classes in college to go to Tin Pan Alley, a part of New York City where many music publishers and songwriters had “set up shop.” After he worked hard to get noticed, Sunbeam Music Publishing offered him a contract to write songs for $50 per week.

Neil Diamond dropped out of college at this point and never went back. But Sunbeam didn’t hire him back when Diamond’s contract was up. He had to go out on his own, writing songs and putting out singles that didn’t do well in the early 1960s.

Even though these singles didn’t sell well, they got good reviews, which brought the attention of Columbia Records. They signed him, but when he kept failing, they let him go.
