In honor of Saint Francis of Assisi, he chose Francis as his papal name. Francis has been known throughout his public life for his humility, focus on God’s mercy, international visibility as pope, care for the poor, and commitment to dialogue between different religions.
People say that he was less formal as a pope than his predecessors. For example, he chose to live in the Domus Sanctae Marthae guesthouse instead of the papal apartments in the Apostolic Palace, which his predecessors had lived in.
Francis sticks to the church’s views on women becoming priests. However, he started a conversation about the possibility of women becoming deaconesses and gave women full membership in dicasteries in the Roman Curia.
He thinks the church should be more open to and accepting of LGBT people. Francis is an outspoken critic of unchecked capitalism, free market economics, consumerism, and overdevelopment. He wants action on climate change, which has been a focus of his papacy since Laudato si’ was released.
In international diplomacy, he worked to get the United States and Cuba to have full diplomatic relations again. He also helped refugees during the European and Central American migrant crises and made a deal with China about how much power the country had in appointing Catholic bishops.
Theological conservatives have criticized him on many issues, including what some people think is a hint in a footnote of Amoris Laetitia that divorced and remarried Catholics may be allowed to receive the Eucharist.

Jorge Mario Bergoglio was born on December 17, 1936, in a part of Buenos Aires called Flores. Mario Jose Bergoglio (1908–1959) and Regina Maria Sivori had five children, and he was the oldest (1911–1981). Mario Bergoglio was an accountant who came to the United States from Italy.
He was born in Portacomaro (Province of Asti) in the Piedmont region of Italy. Regina Sivori was a housewife born in Buenos Aires to Piedmontese-Genoese parents. The family of Mario Jose left Italy in 1929 to escape Benito Mussolini’s fascist rule.
Maria Elena Bergoglio, the pope’s only living sibling born in 1948, says they didn’t leave for money. Oscar Adrián died in 1938; Marta Regina, who died in 1940; and Alberto Horacio were his other brothers and sisters (1942–2010). Antonio and Joseph, who were great-nephews, were killed in a car accident. Cristina Bergoglio, his niece, is a painter in Madrid, Spain.

How Is Pope Francis’ Health?
After hearing that the current pope has already made plans to retire if he gets sick and can’t do his job, many of his faithful followers started to worry about his health. When this was written, there was no evidence that a similar resignation due to poor health was likely to happen soon.
But Pope Francis had surgery on his intestines in 2021, and he has had knee pain in the past that has forced him to use a wheelchair for months at a time. Francis had surgery on his bowel in July 2021, and he spent 11 days in the hospital. Diverticular stenosis, a narrowing of the colon, was giving him a lot of trouble.
Still, a nurse at the Vatican persuaded him to have surgery to remove a part of his colon instead of continuing to take antibiotics and other drugs. Now, he can “live a normal life,” he said. At the time, he quickly shot down rumors that he was thinking about retiring by saying that the idea “didn’t even cross my mind.”
