The west German city of Bergisch Gladbach, where Klum was born and raised, is close to Cologne. She is the daughter of an executive at a cosmetics company Günther Klum and a hairdresser Erna Klum.
She entered the “Model 92” national modeling competition after being persuaded by a friend. Klum won the competition out of 25,000 participants on April 29, 1992, and Thomas Zeumer, CEO of Metropolitan Models New York, presented her with a modeling contract worth $300,000 USD.
After winning, she appeared on Thomas Gottschalk’s Gottschalk Late Night Show, a German television program. After graduating from college a few months later, she agreed to the contract and decided not to apply for an apprentice position at a fashion design school.
