Erik Spoelstra’s Father Gave Life-Changing Advice, 27 Years Ago!

During NBA Finals media day and practice, Erik Spoelstra sat down with ESPN’s Malika Andrews to discuss his rise from video coordinator for the Miami Heat to two-time NBA champion head coach.

A former NBA executive, Jon Spoelstra Sr. worked for the Buffalo Braves, Portland Trail Blazers, Denver Nuggets, and New Jersey Nets before he became a coach. When the younger Spoelstra landed his first NBA gig, the elder Spoelstra gave him some advice, knowing how precarious the business could be.

The 52-year-old coach has spent nearly half his life with the Heat, taking his father’s advice.

Spoelstra laughed as Andrews showed him a black-and-white photo from his time as a video coordinator. In jest, the trainer inquired about the reason for the photo’s monochrome presentation, maintaining that “he’s not that old.”
