The day after being released from prison in Cyprus, a retired miner who murdered his chronically ill wife visited her cemetery. David Hunter was sentenced to two years in prison for the manslaughter of his wife Janice, 74, during an assisted suicide at their house.
After awaiting his trial for 19 months, the 76-year-old was released. Mrs. Hunter was buried near their property in Tremithousa, near Paphos, after her death in December 2021.
Hunter, originally from Ashington in Northumberland, had been unable to attend the burial because he had been hospitalized after attempting suicide after murdering his wife of 52 years.

He was then imprisoned before being convicted, not guilty of planned murder but guilty of manslaughter by a three-judge panel. Due to time served and good behavior, he was released within 15 minutes of being convicted in Paphos District Court on Monday.
Hunter initially couldn’t identify the cemetery and was led there by Michael Polak of Justice Abroad, who represented him during his trial. He knelt beside the grave for almost 30 minutes, carrying a bouquet of pink, purple, and yellow flowers.
Lesley Cawthorne, the couple’s daughter, stated earlier that she believed her father would stay in Cyprus near Mrs. Hunter’s grave and “say his goodbyes properly.”
Throughout his year-long trial, Hunter testified that his wife “cried and begged” him to take her life because she had blood cancer. He stated that he would “never in a million years” have killed Mrs Hunter unless she specifically requested it.
He demonstrated to the court how he put his hands over his wife’s mouth and nose, claiming that she got “hysterical” and that he eventually chose to grant her wish. Judges heard that he then attempted suicide by taking an overdose, but paramedics arrived in time to save him.
