After completing his college career, Grant was selected for the NFL draught by the Philadelphia Eagles and the NBA draught by the Minneapolis Lakers. He ultimately decided to play football and signed up with the Eagles in 1950 as a defensive end.
In 1952, an injury ended Grant’s playing career, but he swiftly switched to coaching, starting as an assistant coach at the University of Minnesota. He was appointed the Canadian Football League’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers head coach in 1957(CFL).
Throughout his ten-year tenure as head coach, Grant led the Blue Bombers to six Grey Cup victories, making them one of the CFL’s most successful teams. Grant was renowned for his planned and methodical coaching style, and his teams were outstanding for their effective offense and powerful defense.
Grant was appointed head coach of the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings in 1967. The faltering team was swiftly turned around by him, and in 1970 they made their first of four Super Bowl appearances.
Grant became one of the most successful head coaches in NFL history during his 18-year tenure as head coach, leading the Vikings to two NFC championships and 11 division crowns.
