As a comedian, talk show presenter, television personality, actor, writer, and producer, Arsenio Hall has a $30 million net worth. For his appearance in Coming to America in 1988, Hall was paid $900,000.
Arsenio Hall Career
After graduating, Career Hall moved to Chicago and later Los Angeles to pursue a career in comedy. On “Soul Train,” he made multiple appearances.
He joined Alan Thicke’s short-lived chat program “Thicke of the Night” in 1984 as his announcer/sidekick. His big break came in 1988 when he appeared in the movie “Coming to America” with Eddie Murphy.
To compete with “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson,” Fox created “The Late Show,” a late-night debate program where Hall served as interim host.
This was Hall’s first step towards hosting his talk show. The show’s first host was the late comedian Joan Rivers, but she was sacked because of the show’s poor ratings. Hall developed a cult following due to his successful tenure as interim host.
Fox terminated “The Late Show” in 1988, but on January 2, 1989, “The Arsenio Hall Show” had its national television debut as a syndicated program.
The program was quite popular, especially with the younger crowd. Hall made a name for himself (and his performance) by yelling, “Roo, Roo, Roo!” and pumping his fists instead of clapping.
It’s not just Hall who participates in the “Dawg Pound” chant for the Cleveland Browns in the east end zone. “Roo, Roo, Roo” became a Household evening ritual and a symbol in popular culture.
Another notable feature of Hall’s event was that Bill Clinton, who was running for president then, performed on the saxophone there. On May 27, 1994, “The Arsenio Hall Show” broadcasted its final.
During “The Arsenio Hall Show,” Magic Johnson revealed he was HIV positive. As a result, Hall leveraged his fame to spread awareness of HIV/AIDS. Early in the 1990s, Hall and Magic Johnson released a cancer PSA.
