Katie Porter Announces: Tuesday morning, Democratic Rep. Katie Porter declared her candidature for the California Senate seat now held by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, a fellow Democrat and the longest-serving female senator in history. Porter proclaimed that the U.S. Senate needs new leadership in a video she released to Twitter.
“I don’t approach Congress the same way many people do. I proclaim the truth to the powers with all my strength, “said Porter. “To call it out, not only to criticize the established quo.“
In her video, Porter specifically criticizes Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and other “so-called leaders” for turning the Senate into a place where “rights get revoked, special interests get rewarded, and our democracy gets rigged” after showing images of the Capitol attack and warning of a “constant assault on our democracy.“
Porter stated, “California needs a warrior in Washington, especially in these times, and that’s precisely why I’m declaring my candidature for the United States Senate in 2024. Feinstein, 89, has not said if she will run for reelection, but Reps. Barbara Lee and Adam Schiff of California may be interested in taking her place.
Feinstein stated hours after Porter’s video, “Everyone is, of course, welcome to throw their hat in the ring, and I will make an announcement concerning my plans for 2024 at the proper time.“

“Currently, my main concern is ensuring California has all the resources necessary to deal with the severe storms battering the state.” Due to California’s jungle primary system, two Democrats may face off against one another in the general election.
Porter, 49, a rising Democratic, progressive star, prevailed in a close election for California’s 47th Congressional District this past November. The former professor of law and middle school math teacher has been a member of the House of Representatives since 2019.
She represents a firmly split district and has consistently been behind California Democrats in the polls. Porter, a mother of three, has acquired celebrity on social media for her whiteboard-based interrogations on the Oversight and Natural Resources Committees.
California needs a warrior in the Senate—to stand up to special interests, fight the dangerous imbalance in our economy, and hold so-called leaders like Mitch McConnell accountable for rigging our democracy.

She even brought the props to appearances on late-night television. Just last week, she read a deliberately titled book on the House floor while she appeared to taunt Republicans during lengthy speakership votes slyly.
Despite rumors that Feinstein won’t run for office again in 2024 and concerns about her age and health, the senator has made no statements about it. Feinstein has fought tirelessly to increase the number of women in Congress. She surpassed Sen. Barbara Mikulski of Maryland to take the title of woman senator with the longest tenure this past November.
“Seeing more and more women enter the Senate has been an absolute delight. When I stood for office in 1992, only two women were in the Senate. Today, there are 24, and I believe that number will continue to rise, “said Feinstein.
