Right fielder Ronald Acua Jr. of the Atlanta Braves wants to play through the “terrible” pain in his right knee until the end of the season.
Acuna told Gabe Burns of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution how his knee felt after Atlanta beat the Colorado Rockies 3-2 on Wednesday.
“Terrible,” Acuna replied. “But we’re going to keep playing until the end of the season.”
For the past month, Acuna has missed a few games here and there for different reasons. He had lower body pain on August 7, right knee pain on August 14, and more good knee problems that caused him to miss two games against the St. Louis Cardinals and one against Colorado on August 27 and 28 (August 30).
He went 1-for-4 with a solo home run on Wednesday, his first day back in the lineup. Acuna is hit for the season. In 92 games, he hit.274 with 11 home runs and 36 RBI (an OPS of.779).
Any injury to Acuna is sure to worry Atlanta because he is vital to the team and what has happened to him in the past.
During the 2021 season, he tore the ACL in his right knee. This meant he could only play in 82 games and missed the team’s run to the championship. He also hurt his foot playing against the Los Angeles Dodgers in June of this year. He needed a medical scooter because he had trouble putting weight on it.
Acuna is one of the Braves’ leaders when he’s healthy. He’s been an All-Star three times and won two Silver Sluggers. His power at the plate and speed on the bases and in the field can change the game.
Atlanta will be used to playing without him by the end of the 2021 season, but the team is still much more dangerous when he is on the field.
It looks like he’ll stay there now as the Atlanta Braves keep trying to catch the first-place New York Mets in the National League East.
